17 Years ago is still relevant today

In the movie "Merchants of Cool", we learned about all the things that were "cool" in the early 21st century. The ad companies tried to construct their advertisements around what was cool and in style at the time to try and appeal more to the audience. What was interesting about this is that in the movie it said that ad companies would try this and all of a sudden the trend becomes unpopular, and that companies should try and focus more on what they think will be cool. The technique of using cool trends or styles in advertising, I think are still present in today's ads. Especially with some of the bigger companies who have a larger audience. Now that this idea from the movie is in my head I cant help but notice that we still see the same approach in today's advertisements. One ad that i saw that uses this technique is one by Sprite. The ad features Lebron James and Lil Yachty. Lebron is already well known and is probably one of the best sports figures in the world, but Lil Yachty is not that well known and is considered more as an upcoming artist when compared to the bigger names in music.Sprite is trying to appeal to us by using an upcoming artist so we are attracted to the ad more. Sprite is predicting what will eventually be cool which is a technique that was showcased in the movie we watched in class. Also what i found interesting about this ad by Sprite is that this ad is using both a already well known and popular figure in Lebron James and an upcoming artist in Lil Yachty, and in the frontline movie we watched it said that ads shouldn't use the new trends but predict what will be the new trend. And Sprite is doing both in their ad. The Frontline episode we watched revealed ways that companies try to appeal to us and these ways are still present in today's advertising world.
