Ads on Spotify

Most of the time when I am listening to music I use an app called Spotify. While I was listening to music an ad appeared, the ad was for Subway and what caught my attention was that it was very casual, which is interesting because if it is casual then it would be probably easier to overlook. I usually hate advertisements when I am listening to music because they are annoying and are usually pointless and do not interest me. This ad by Subway caught my attention because it didn't use any annoying sounds or loud music, instead the ad was just a casual conversation between two people eating Subway and talking about the sandwich. You can tell that this ad was using Plain folks as one of their techniques because this ad used regular and ordinary people to advertise their sandwich and it makes you feel like you are apart of the conversation. This wasn't like the typical ads you hear on Spotify, from my experience it is usually ads with loud sounds to catch your attention or its an ad for a movie. I hate ads in general but since they are now basically every where I have gotten used to it, ads nowadays are using techniques that are more appealing to the audience, and since we are learning about the different techniques used by ad companies I am able to spot them easier. Towards the end of the ad, Subway uses music when naming their product, I think this is because Subway wants us to have a good association with their new Italian sandwich. If we do have a good association with the sandwich then maybe it will attract us into buying it more. I will continue to try and ignore ads as best I can but in today's world they are every where and almost inescapable. There are some ads that may have a message that is very subtle but have a bigger affect on the ones that standout more.

  1. I have Spotify premium so I don't get ads, but before I had it, Spotify did have a lot of ads that you couldn't avoid. You are listening to music and then all of a sudden you would hear the ad and it was very annoying.

  2. I agree that there are a lot of ads on Spotify. I only listen to it because I can listen to the type of music I want without having to hear seven minutes of boring ads on the radio. However, recently there have been more ads on Spotify which is making me lean somewhere else to get my music. As much as I try tk ignore those ads, they jave powerful messages that seem very subtle, like you said. Although they aren't attention grabbing, I feel that these ads are more dangerous because the messages slil into your subconscious unnoticed, whicb is very scary. So you might think that you have control of what you're influenced by, but you really don't.
