Reflection
Media, like most other people, has become a big part of my life. As long as i have my phone on me, I am being exposed to media. Sometimes I don't want media to be consumed by media, but it is almost impossible to completely avoid it. It is just about everywhere we look and our phones are a prime example of it. If we go on our phones there is a good chance we are being exposed to some type of media whether it be ads or news coverages. After taking critical thinking, I feel that I am more aware of the different portrayals of media and the affect that it can have on us, because i was more aware on its affects my view on media has changed. I now try and limit myself on how much media i consume because it does shape your perception. If we do not know the affects that different types of media can have than we become more susceptible to those affects. This is why it is very important to understand and be aware of how media can shape your opinions on things. Before I took critical thinking I could see that media had a bigger impact on me. I used to believe some of the things that I read online and the ads sort of shaped my perception on what products are good and bad. Now that I am more aware i see myself not giving into media and turning away from it.
This past semester my view on media has changed a lot. I now try to turn off media every time i get the chance and I become less focused on it in general. Even though I try not to, I am still being exposed to a certain type of media daily because with the world we live in today it is almost impossible to completely shut yourself off from media. Media is one thing that is always going to be everywhere you look and is nearly impossible to escape. After learning how media can really influence your life I started to look at the negative affects of media. This is why I strive to limit my media consumption. I have noticed sometimes that I focus too much on what is online when in realty it doesn't really matter. Also when I am exposed to media, I always try to analyze it. By that I mean whenever I see something like an ad, I am always trying to observe and figure out their techniques. Taking critical thinking has definitely widen my perspective of the world and has opened me up to opinions and sides of arguments that aren't always in the media or the sides that the media tries to hide from you.
While I was keeping this blog, I started to notice that every week I was improving my skills of analyzing media. As I mentioned, with improved skills it will be easier to analyze and understand the different types of media and its affects. If we can do this then it will help us be less susceptible to those affects and we can distance ourselves from the bad parts of media. I think that media is like a two sided coin, there is a good side and a bad side. Sometimes we aren't able to distinguish the two sides and this helps us form the wrong perceptions. My whole perception on media has changed a lot this past semester and I am happy with the skills I obtained and I will continue to try and not let myself become too consumed by the media.
